The Rotary Club of Wahroonga inducted John into the Club in November 1986. During his membership of Rotary, John has served terms as Community Service Director, Program Director, Youth Service Director, Social Director, Vice President and President. In John's year as President, Wahroonga won the District Shield. He is also a PHF.

John led the District's 2006 GSE Team to Sweden & Russia. Since his return, John, together with his team members, have been busy visiting clubs and reporting on their experiences. John is the current GSE Chairman. He has initiated an additional (themed) GSE visit in 2008 and through his international Rotary connections has shown the way for District 9680 to conduct a New Generations Exchange with clubs from Switzerland and UK in 2008. His involvement with the RYLA committee and more recently the Novus Foundation, a community initiative of the Wahroonga Club, has been a challenging and rewarding experience. John & Margaret have been regular conference attendees, both being interested in the breadth, spread, and influence for the good of Rotary beyond Wahroonga. They have attended international conventions in Brisbane, Australia (2003), Chicago Illinois, USA (2005), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA (2007), and Los Angeles, California, USA (2008).

Community involvement & service has occupied the vast majority of John's available leisure time. He has always been an active member of his church: he is a Life Member of the Association of Apex Clubs: deeply involved in politics and a board member of the Achieve Foundation Limited. During the eighties he was, for a number of years, a Council member and Treasurer of Knox Grammar School and Wahroonga Preparatory School.

Since 1967 John has been involved in commerce, principally with significant agricultural corporations and independent schools. He holds a BEc from Macquarie University, is a Chartered Secretary & Manager and a CPA. He began his working life as a teacher and also holds a teaching credential from Armidale Teachers College.

John is married to Margaret. Their only daughter, Hilary is married to Robert and they have 2 sons. Malcolm their eldest son, is married to Catherine and they have 3 daughters. The youngest son, Ian is married to Belinda, and they have 3 sons. His interests include music, art & theatre, and he plays tennis regularly and golf, regrettably, less often.
