DG's Update

ISSUE 17 - 22nd May 2013

May is Australian Rotary Health (ARH) Month; did your club focus on how it could support ARH by contributions or sponsoring one of the research programs, scholarships or even holding a workshop.

May is the month where the club Board should analyses their giving throughout the year to ensure that the Rotary programmes have featured in their giving.  It is important that giving to our charities of choice, such as the Rotary Foundation, Australian Rotary Health, ROMAC, Interplast, RAM and Ranfurly Book Aid are made prior to 30th June to have the contribution recorded as the 2012-13 Rotary year.  If this hasn’t been done, perhaps this is a timely reminder to so.

This month has seen a significant number of high profile projects.  The announcement of the finalists for the Pride of the Illawarra resulted in extensive coverage by WIN Television, radio and the three Illawarra papers.  The Wings over the Illawarra Air show on Sunday, 5th May, gave Rotary a high profile as part of the organisation and gate control.  Youth programmes featured strongly with MUNA being a tremendous success once again.  RYPEN planning is well under way with the camp scheduled for 24th to 26th May.

The Five Dock Rotary Club celebrated their 40th Anniversary on Saturday 18th May; an enjoyable night with members, past and present, attending along with a number of Rotarians from around the district.  It was a great night for reminiscing.

ROMAC celebrated its 25th Anniversary on Friday 10th May which was recognised at a cocktail function held by their Patron, the Governor General Quinton Bryce at Admiralty House.  There were 49 invited guests made up of ROMAC Board members and partners; key ROMAC personnel from the Sydney and surrounding Rotary Districts; Rotary District Governors and partners from the Sydney area; doctors, surgeons and administrators who have cared for ROMAC patients at the two Sydney Children’s Hospitals; as well as representatives from major corporate supporters Johnson & Johnson and Eureka Funds Management.

The Group Study Exchange team is currently in District 6220 in Wisconsin/Michigan in the USA.  They have a blog site and I hope each of you is following their journey - http://9750gseteam.weebly.com.

The Bus Back promotion, one of the components of the RI PR Grant, ran during April and is still on some of the buses.  Please let either the District Public Awareness Chair Stephen Lovison or myself know whether, and how often, you saw the promotion – give us feedback for our report to RI.

A Paul Harris quote in My Road to Rotary – Friendship was the foundation on which Rotary was built and tolerance is the element which holds it together.  There is enough atomic energy in every Rotary club to blow it into a thousand bits were it not for the spirit of tolerance.

ISSUE 16 - 30th April 2013

April was Rotary International’s magazine month during which Rotarians and Rotary Clubs were asked to do whatever they could to recognise and promote Rotary Regional magazines.   Worldwide there are only 23 approved regional magazines so Rotary in the South Pacific is privileged having its own regional magazine with regional content.  Did your club make a special effort?  Membership in Rotary requires a subscription to either the Rotarian (USA version) or the Rotary Down Under Magazine.

April has been a busy month with attendance at official functions such as The Rotary Club of Engadine 40th Anniversary, The Police Officer of the Year for the Eastern Suburbs and Botany Bay sponsored by the Maroubra, Randwick and Botany Bay Clubs and an International Night hosted by the Rotary Club of Corrimal where the guest speaker was the Ambassador from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

Following the second ballot to approve the D9675 Constitution due to a quorum not being present at the initial meeting, I can advise that the ‘Ballot by Mail’ was successful and the revised constitution is now in the process of being lodged with the Department of Fair Trading to enable the District 9675 Incorporated Association to be registered.  The framework for the new District to take place from 1st July 2013 is now back on track.

During the month I was able to nominate 18 Rotary Clubs, 4 Rotaract Clubs and 1 Interact Club for a Presidential Citation.  It was disappointing that so few clubs set their focus for the year on RI President Sakuji Tanaka’s theme for the year as it is not only a club recognition but also District recognition of the RI President and his theme.

The Group Study Exchange team has gone through their final training and depart on 2nd May 2013 as our District, Australian and their vocation representatives to District 6220 in Wisconsin/Michigan in the USA.

I have received from Rotary International an attached article that deals with the direct contribution option through Member Access on the RI website.  It’s a great benefit to be able to use the RI website to contribute in our own currencies, gain tax deductibility and have the contribution converted to US dollars at the current RI rate with no exchange fees or bank charges.  Everybody wins with this one.

During the month I have received an article on how to write a press release and include it for your perusal.  To use this process will help gain the much needed access for Rotary awareness through the newsprint media.

The Bus Back promotion, one of the components of the RI PR Grant, ran during April.  Please let either the District Public Awareness Chair Stephen Lovison or myself know whether, and how often, you saw the promotion – give us feedback for our report to RI.

May is Australian Rotary Health (ARH) Month; as Rotarians think about how we can support ARH by contributions or sponsoring one of the research programs, scholarships or even holding a workshop.  ARH should be our Australian Charity of choice, so consider a contribution this month.

A Paul Harris quote in the Rotarian in February 1945 is as relevant today as it was then – ‘I would like to think that the pioneering days of Rotary have only just begun.  There are just as many new things to be done as ever there were.  Kaleidoscopic changes are taking place, many of them without our will.  Even to hang on to the fringe of this fast changing world is about all most of us can do.  Rotary simply must continue to pioneer or be left in the rear of progress’.

Issue 15 - 30th March 2013

March was Literacy month where Rotarians focused on ‘Basic education and literacy’; one of the six Areas of Focus under the incoming Future Vision Plan. There are many innovative projects around the District such as school packs to developing nations, programs with local and international schools as well as support for Ranfurly Book Aid in the form of donations to cover distribution costs. Projects that empower communities with simple, creative and sustainable ways that help break the cycle of poor education.

It is pleasing as I visit clubs to see a wide variety of projects across all avenues of service. This has been evident by the many clubs who have submitted a form for the RI Presidential Citation.

The second round of District Simplified Grants has been finalised and Clubs are in the process of being advised of their allocation of funding.

The pace set by clubs has not waned throughout March; there has been PETs, Rotary Celebrates Inspirational Women, Police Officer of the Year recognitions as well as club and Group special event presentations.  Added to this has been my second round of AG Group Presidents’ meetings. These meetings have confirmed that all clubs are active and collaborating on projects which are too big for individual club sizes.

Separate articles will appear in this Newsletter regarding:
•    A call for volunteers for the Sydney 2014 RI Convention
•    Shelterbox Expo held in Martin Place
•    District Simplified Grants

April is Magazine Month; as Rotarians think about how they can incorporate this emphasis into club programmes it would be appropriate to extend the focus for the month to communications. Magazines are only one aspect of communication; there is now a greater emphasis on social media which is immediate and far reaching.

The Bus Back promotion one of the components of the RI PR Grant will be running during April. Let us have some feedback.
A message from Paul Harris to the 1927 RI Convention, Ostend Belgium – “ The greatest resource which a nation can have is the resource of peace, it counts for more than arable lands, more than mines of untold riches”.

ISSUE 14 - 20th March 2013

March is Literacy month where Rotarians can celebrate having helped empower communities with simple, creative and sustainable ways to break the cycle of poor education. Literacy plays an important role in healthy and productive lives.

District 9750 with the support of the NSW and ACT Districts, presented a very successful Inspirational Women’s Awards evening on 8th March 2013. The venue, the programme and function were acknowledged as an excellent event by those who attended. Thanks go to Fern Linden who chaired the committee. District 9750’s Inspirational Woman was Sharyn Mackenzie nominated by the Rotary Club of Illawarra Sunrise with the overall NSW Inspirational Woman being Hilda Fitzgerald nominated by District 9710’s Rotary Club of Canberra North.  While each of the eight NSW Rotary Districts and Inner Wheel had a winner, all thirty-nine nominations were winners based on their achievements; therefore congratulations to all nominees.

The brochure covering the details of the “Down Under” Breakfast being held in Lisbon at the RI 2013 Convention on Sunday 23rd June 2013 is attached. For Rotarians going to the Lisbon RI Convention and interested in attending the breakfast; bookings close at the end of May.

A Fact Sheet on ‘Charitable Fundraising – General Information’ is attached.  This information whilst known by most is still important and should be reviewed by all clubs and Rotarians, thus ensuring Clubs are compliant.

Clubs should not forget Ranfurly Book Aid in their annual giving; while books are donated there is also a cost in transport.  Address details are at the front of the District directory.

The Presidential Citation forms are required by 31st March 2013; however, do not leave the notification until that date.  I trust all Clubs are in a position to submit and reap the recognition from RI President, Sakuji Tanka.

A message from Paul Harris to the 1940 RI Convention, Havana, Cuba – “I have no hesitation in saying that world peace could be achieved and made permanent if reared on Rotary’s firm foundation of friendliness, tolerance and usefulness”.

ISSUE 13 - 3rd March 2013

February was ‘World Understanding Month’ where Rotary International asked clubs to emphasise ‘understanding and goodwill as essential for world peace’; an ideal time to promote the peace theme for this year as part of the 108th year celebration.  I had the pleasure of dedicating a ‘Rotary Peace Seat’ in Mt Keira Summit Park for the RC of Wollongong on 23rd February to celebrate Rotary’s anniversary and to facilitate RI President Sakuji Tanaka’s request for Clubs to do a peace project.

The District Public Awareness District team under the leadership of Stephen Lovison has had a busy month with the following initiatives:

  • The media release template titled ‘Local Hero turns 108 This Year’ was circulated to all clubs for regional newsprint to help celebrate Rotary’s 108th anniversary.
  • The Radio component of the Rotary International PR Grant where 16 slots celebrating the 108th anniversary promoted Rotary over 3 days culminating on 23rd February.
  • The second component of the Rotary International PR Grant which will provide 40 bus backs over a 4 week period from 25th March to 22nd April.
  • The Rotary International PR Grant was applied for in March 2012 where Rotary International gives support of 75% of the cost for an agreed promotion and related cost.

While on the Public Awareness theme, there is a coordinated Australia wide initiative called ‘Rotarians & Friends @ Work’-website http://www.rotariansandfriendsatwork.org.au. This initiative encourages Rotarians to do ‘hands on jobs’ in the community during the first three weeks in April. There is a separate email on the subject; however, visit the website as it covers the detail.

On Wednesday 27th February I attended the RC Sutherland ‘Excellence in Workmanship’ Awards presentation.  I was honoured to present a RI Service Above Self Award to Dr Ron Sommers for his long-term service to the community.  The award is Rotary’s highest honour and has a stringent criteria - The Rotary International Service Above Self Award is an internationally competitive award granted to a maximum of 150 Rotarians per year who are examples of ‘Service Above Self’.  The nominee must have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service, in any form and at any level, with an emphasis on personal volunteer efforts and active involvement in helping others through Rotary. Service rendered by the nominee through Rotary must have been on a continuing basis and the award is not given solely in recognition of one’s performance in an elected or appointed Rotary engagement.  Personal financial contributions to The Rotary Foundation or any individual project are not relevant considerations for this award.

On 1st February along with MLA Michael Gallagher, Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Commissioners for the Emergency Services, the Pride of the Illawarra was launched with strong representation by many of the Service Commissioners, local Parliamentarians and Councillors present.  This is a collaborative project between the Rotary Clubs in the Illawarra to recognise members of the emergency services.  The launch attracted widespread print, radio and television coverage.

The Presidential Citation applications are due by 31st March; therefore, all clubs should be preparing their citation documentation.

March is Literacy month which coincides with one of the Foundation’s areas of focus – Basic education and literacy; therefore, make sure literacy is in your plans for future projects.

A message from Paul Harris to the 1921 RI Convention, Edinburgh, Scotland – “The measure of a nation’s progress as well as the measure of an individual’s progress must ever be its readiness to learn from the experience of others”.

ISSUE 12 - 3rd February 2013

Another month has passed and quite a lot has happened in January even though for Rotarians, January is more like a half month. In the first update for the month I spoke about the amazing New Generations programme RYLA; you will find a separate story in this newsletter. I had the pleasure of attending the launch of ‘Freedom’s Path’, an exhibition of Indigenous Art by the young people of the Reiby Juvenile Justice Centre.  The program is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Macarthur Sunrise whose aim is to help these boys, many of whom are indigenous, to realise that they have artistic skills.  Indigenous artist Adam Hill provides guidance and inspiration to help in their development.

January was Rotary Awareness Month and a time for all to reflect on how we promote Rotary to the community. Public Awareness is not a one-month exercise; it is something that continues all year.

Some important topics outlined at the Presidents’ meeting on Friday evening:

  • Public Awareness Chair Stephen Lovison offered a template for all clubs to use in a media blitz on, and around, Rotary’s 108th birthday, 23rd February.  I strongly recommend all clubs to utilise the format and media contacts supplied by Stephen.
  • Changes to the Child Protection Legislation were outlined by the District Child Protection Officer, Denys Cato.  This legislation was due to commence on 11th February, but the date has been deferred; once specific details are received, all Clubs will be notified.  The new system will be an on-line clearance which is renewable every five years.
  • A session on Future Vision was given, where the new Rotary Foundation Grants system was outlined. More detailed sessions will be held at PETs and a planned Seminar to be held on Monday, 4th March to enable all clubs to become qualified.  Qualification is a pre-requisite to partaking in Global Grants.
  • The second round of District Simplified Grants is open with applications required by 28th February 2013.
  • The 2013 Inspirational Women’s Award is to be held on Friday, 8th March 2013 at Doltone House, Jones Bay Wharf.  All NSW Districts will be represented.  Go to the District website and make a club booking to witness this inspiring presentation.

As the members of District 9750 transition into District 9675 on 1st July 2013, there will be an incorporated entity for D9750 that will no longer have members and, therefore, needs to be would-up.  As per the Constitution, I can report that the Ballot by Mail for the Resolution to Dissolve District 9750 was held with the outcome being the Resolution passed with no negative votes.

February is World Understanding Month and the messages given by Paul Harris to the 1914 RI Convention in Houston Texas seem appropriate:

  • If Rotary ceases to be a responsibility and becomes a mere relaxation or pastime, its usefulness will cease

and

  • Whatever Rotary may means to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.

“Peace through Service”,

DG Bill Salter

ISSUE 11 - 18th January 2013

Welcome to the second half of the 2012-13 Rotary year. I trust that everyone has had an enjoyable Christmas break and comes back to Rotary refreshed for the year ahead.

January is Rotary Awareness Month and is a time for all of us to reflect on how we promote Rotary to the community. To help promote the awareness of Rotary there is a simple process that can be used. Members should be encouraged to wear their club shirt while out in the community; also display club banners or signs at community events and service projects. Websites, Club Newsletters, Facebook and Newspaper articles can reflect the Rotary brand through the choice of colours and graphics. Consistency and frequency are the keys to making the effort successful. For the public and potential members, Public Awareness is about the history of Rotary as well as the future; therefore, it important to get both messages across.

Another successful Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is currently happening at Stanwell Tops and an update and report will be included in the next issue.

All Clubs should have held their Annual General meeting in December and, as a follow-up to that, ensure that the Annual Return is filed with the Department of Fair Trading within twenty-eight days of the AGM.

Clubs will be receiving their second half semi-annual dues for both Rotary International and District during January. These are due for payment by 31st January 2013. Prompt payment is necessary for two reasons; both RI and District require funding for cash flow as well as understanding the membership numbers at an early point. Don’t be one of the recalcitrant clubs.

There are critical dates that have to be adhered to:

  • Voting on the Motion to Dissolve District 9750 has to be voted upon by a ballot by mail by 18th January, 2013. The voting is basically a procedural matter as District 9750 will have no members from 30th June 2013 as we all transition into District 9675.
  • The Club representative to vote on the Motion to Adopt the Constitution for District 9675 has to be returned by 18th January 2013. The special meeting for voting on this motion will be on 17th February 2013 at D9675 Pre-PETs.
  • The Nomination for District Governor D9675 for the Rotary year 2015-16 has a closing date of 1st February 2013.  Please nominate likely candidates a.s.a.p. - do not leave to the last minute.
  • The 2013 Inspirational Women’s Award is to be held on Friday 8th March 2013 at Doltone House, Jones Bay Wharf.  All NSW Districts will be represented.  Go to the District website and make a club booking to witness an inspiring presentation.

The idea behind the award is to highlight the work done in our communities by quiet achievers about whom little is known outside family and social circles, but whose efforts make a significant difference.  It is not about achieving high levels or status in one’s chosen profession, but about serving the community and, as our Rotary motto states, ‘Service Above Self’.  It is about commitment, dedication, perseverance and proactively improving the lives of others.

Over recent weeks details have been forwarded to Clubs advising where donations can be made to Bushfire Disaster Funds for both Tasmania and the Coonabarabran area.  I have directed our clubs to the individual Districts’ Disaster Funds as our District 9750 Trust Fund is in the process of being wound up as we transition to D9675.

A message from Paul Harris to the 1927 RI Convention, Ostend, Belgium – Let us destroy the foes to understanding. The three generals in command of the destructive forces are Suspicion, Jealousy and Fear. Let us stimulate and encourage the constructive forces and place in their command the three greatest generals the world has known: Faith, Love and Courage.

ISSUE 10 - 21st December, 2012

It is hard to imagine that the 2012 year is almost over and that the Rotary year has reached the half-way point. Now is the time to reflect on our individual or club goals and review the progress we have made.  How many of us have achieved the challenges we set out to do; and if not, does our club need to reset some of the goals and embrace new beginnings as the clock rolls over into 2013.

The Christmas and holiday season is now upon us and many clubs are involved in helping distribute gifts, food hampers and joy to those less fortunate.  However, it is also a time to spend quality time with our families.  With December’s Rotary theme being ‘Family Month’, it is a time to look back at the development of our family unit and review how it can move forward in harmony.

From a Rotary perspective, Christine and I have completed 48 Official visits with two deferrals rescheduled in February 2013. I have been enlightened by the depth and cross-section of the projects undertaken by each of the clubs. There is no correlation to the size of the membership when it comes to the type and magnitude of the projects; it is the foresight and stewardship of the club. Most clubs can feel proud of their achievements and, after the small break at Christmas, can return invigorated to progress the work of Rotary to higher levels.

When doing my Official Visits, I was surprised at the lack of knowledge some Rotarians have regarding Rotary generally and many of the Rotary programmes.  Clubs with poor attendance at District Assemblies often missed being informed and adhering to simple administration matters. I emphasise that District training seminars are important and, for in-club training, the Speaker Panel should be consulted.  Consider adding Speaker Panel members and Ambassadorial Scholars to your Guest Speaker list.

Christine and I spent a week in Adelaide at the DG Symposium where the 22 Australian DGs discussed issues pertaining to their Districts.  It is not surprising that each District has similar issues to contend with. The DGsE and DGsN were also in Adelaide undertaking training and on the third day we presented to the DGsE and DGsN issues that they can expect to encounter together with recommendations on how we DGs, as a group, suggest the issues can be handled.  Prior to the official programme, DGs, DGsE and DGsN (affectionately referred to as the ‘DG Train’) decided to arrive a day early to discuss membership and review a membership plan that has been requested by Rotary International.  RI is requesting global Zones to put together a plan relevant to their part of the world.  In Australia the committee designated to undertake the plan preparation consisted of a Rotary International Coordinator, representatives from the DGs, DGsE, DGsN, PDGs, Rotarians, new Rotarians and Rotaractors. This plan, after review by the District Membership group, will be disseminated to Clubs.

Following the DG Symposium and training, PDGs arrived where AGMs were held for the Rotary programmes - RDU, RAWCS, ARH and ROMAC - before a two day Institute was convened.  The Training and Institute is an annual event held at different locations.

By now most clubs will have held their Annual General meetings, which are required under the Incorporated Associations rules, and set in motion the club leadership team for the 2013-2014 Rotary year. Now that the new leadership team is known, it is important to start the process of planning for the 2013-2014, whilst ensuring the current year programme is continued and completed.  Club Public Officers must file an Annual Return with the Department of Fair Trading within twenty-eight days of the AGM.

Over recent weeks documents pertaining to the new Rotary District 9675 have been forwarded to clubs. Presidents and Secretaries should ensure that the timetable is adhered to regarding voting. It is important that action is in accord with the documentation procedure to ensure a smooth transition to the new District on 1st July 2013. As part of the procedure District 9750 will be dissolved and the “Vote by Ballot’ to effect this procedural matter is required by 18th January 2013.

An Important District date for clubs going forward:

NSW & ACT Rotary Inspirational Women Awards 2013

The NSW and ACT Rotary Districts, in conjunction with a number of other organisations, are holding a significant event to identify and honour outstanding women for their service to the community.  This is not a fund raising event; however, any money raised after costs will go to the Rotary Foundation for PolioPlus.  Keep the following dates in your calendar:

1st December 2012 Nominations to Fern Linden

8th March 2013 Awards Gala Dinner

This is a District 9750 initiative which all Districts in NSW are supporting; the project is chaired by Fern Linden, therefore, visit the District website to access the criteria, Nomination Form and register for the Gala Dinner to support your nomination.

I want to thank the Leadership team and Past District Governors for their support. The first half of the Rotary year has been enjoyable and inspirational and I am looking forward to the next six months with enthusiasm as we meet the challenges in store.

Christine and I wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous and safe New Year.

 “Peace through Service”,

DG Bill Salter

ISSUE 9 - 21st November 2012

Welcome to issue number nine of the District Newsletter for 2012-13.  November, being The Rotary Foundation month, is an ideal time to review your club’s Foundation giving.  By allocating a theme to each month, Rotary International provides a focus for clubs to plan in a systematic way.  All clubs are strongly encouraged to utilise the speaker panel to improve Rotary knowledge, with an emphasis in November on Rotary Foundation speakers.

Take some time to consider the range and diversity of Foundation speakers; Ambassadorial Scholars, Annual Giving, Centurion Club, Grants, Permanent Fund, PolioPlus and Peace Scholars - and visit the District Directory for contacts.

On Saturday, 17th November the District 6220 GSE Team returned home. The exchange has been well received by all who came in contact with them. The members had diverse vocations and felt they not only will take home many ideas and experiences to implement in their workplace, but contributed to the organisations they visited on vocational days. Having already built up a rapport with the D6220 Team, the outgoing D9750 Team will, I’m sure, get many helpful hints over the coming months prior to their departure in May 2013.

A successful exchange does not happen without a lot of preparation and I want to thank Committee Chair Fiona Lavan and her committee, the host families for billeting, and the AG Group Rotarians who volunteered to look after them on their vocational and cultural visits.  Thank you to Sutherland Club hosting the ‘Last Hurrah’ meeting;  it . It was a testament to the esteem Tom, Kate, Jennifer, Jamie and Eric were held in by the attendance of the various host families.

November, thus far has been a busy month.

NSW Police Officer of the Year Awards was held on Friday, 2nd November and attended by over 400 people.  This is the third occasion the event has been presented and once again it was an excellent evening under the stewardship of John Given from the Rotary Club of Sydney.  I thank you John for your dedication and leadership.

The first of two Social Media workshops was held on Saturday, 17th November.  This is a hands-on course run by Communications, Social Media & Public Awareness Chair Stephen Lovison and his team.  The session was fully booked as places are limited to the computers available at the training venue.  All participants have a terminal, enabling an interactive seminar. The early feedback is that all participants learnt a lot. Another session is planned for Saturday, 24th November.  Thank you Stephen, I am sure there will be requests for more sessions in the New Year.

For those who attended Roger Woodward playing Chopin on Saturday, 17th November, the talent of this amazing Concert Pianist will live-on.  The proceeds for the concerts are being donated to Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC).  For Roger’s generosity and support of Rotary, the Rotary Club of Chatswood recognised Roger as a PHF after the performance.

On Friday, 9th November, another informative Combined Presidents’ meeting was held.  The agenda touched on too many relevant issues to mention them all; however, one important Club Administration matter needs reiterating.  As Clubs are Incorporated Associations, they need to hold an Annual General meeting within six months of their year end, which for all Clubs, means that this meeting needs to be held prior to 31st December.  The Financial Statements for the year must be approved and the Annual Return then must be lodged with the Department of Fair Trading within 28 days.  For Presidents who are not familiar with these legal requirements, discuss the obligations with your Public Officer.

Important District dates for clubs going forward:

  • RYLA – 12-19th January 2013

RYLA nomination forms have been distributed; please consider nominating one of the many 19-25 year olds who can benefit from this Leadership course.  Visit the District website for RYLA information.

  • NSW & ACT Rotary Inspirational Women Awards 2013

The NSW and ACT Rotary Districts, in conjunction with a number of other organisations, are holding a significant event to identify and honour outstanding women for their service to the community.  This is not a fund raising event; however, any money raised after costs will go to the Rotary Foundation for PolioPlus.  Keep the following dates in your calendar:

  • 1st December 2012                                   Send your nominations to Fern Linden
  • 8th March 2013                                           Awards Gala Dinner

This is a District 9750 initiative which all Districts in NSW are supporting; the project is chaired by Fern Linden, therefore, visit the District website to access the criteria and Nomination Form.  Nominate the Inspirational Women in your area and register for the Gala Dinner to support your nomination.

  • PolioPlus Movie Night – The Life of Pi

Each AG Group or combined AG Groups are organising sessions, therefore, check with your AG or Club President for the date.

As November is The Rotary Foundation Month, take the time to review its many programmes and how you can support the Foundation in their programmes as well as financially.

 “Peace through Service”,

DG Bill Salter

ISSUE 8 - 5th November, 2012

Welcome to issue number eight of the District Newsletter for 2012-13.  With October being Vocational Service month, have you reviewed the vocations of your club membership and used this medium as a focus for membership development.

October has been a busy month.

The Inbound GSE Team from D6220 has arrived and currently undertaking their very busy schedule.  They joined us at the District Conference and enchanted everyone they came in contact with.

The outgoing D9750 GSE team Leader and members were selected and congratulations go to:

Team Leader:

  • Richard Booth from Rotary Club of Wollondilly North

Team members and sponsor Rotary Club:

  • Benjamin Cook                                Rotary Club of Sydney Cove
  • Anna Habeck                                    Rotary Club of Kiama
  • Alexander Lynch                               Rotary Club of Sydney CBD
  • Alisa Williams                                   Rotary Club of Illawarra Sunrise

The Australian Youth Exchange Conference from 12th to 14th October was held and convened by D9750 New Generations Chair, Paul Ward-Harvey - a successful and well planned conference.

The Tri-District Foundation Dinner on 15th October was a success; where Rotarians and Friends from across the Sydney Districts came together to celebrate The Rotary Foundation, Major Donors and Benefactors.

A very successful District Conference rounded off the month.  A big thank you goes to the Conference Chair, AG Stephen Humphreys, and his committee for their dedication in presenting an inspiring, enriching and informative conference.  It received many compliments and a flattering assessment by the Rotary International President’s Representatives PRID Dr John and Shirley Thorne.  In the words of a number of the participants “a conference that should not have been missed by any Rotarian or potential Rotarian – speakers were exceptional and enthused everyone no matter what level of passion each of us has.  When we listen to the speakers and their stories, many touched by Rotary, we cannot help being re-energised to continue our fight to improve the well-being of communities throughout the world”.  See the separate report by Conference Chair.

Our Rotaract Clubs have also been busy.  The Rotaract Conference was held in Canberra on the weekend of 20th & 21st October with a number of our District Rotaractors attended.

RYLA nomination forms have been distributed; please consider nominating one of the many 19-25 year olds who can benefit from this Leadership course.  Visit the District website for RYLA information.

The year has been progressing well with forty-two club visits completed; to see first-hand what clubs have achieved is inspiring.  The diversity in projects ensures that many worthy causes locally, nationally and globally have Rotary participation.

I have also completed the first of two AG Group Presidents’ meetings, the second being in the second half of the DG year in early 2013.  These meeting are interactive and allow clubs to support each other.  They have led to many new initiatives where AG Group clubs are combining to create bigger projects, combined meeting to facilitate higher profile speakers and fellowship across clubs.  It also allows sharing of AG Group calendars so that clubs can support each other on projects and events rather than compete with each other by selecting the same date.

By now, every club would have received details of the Rotary Inspirational Women Awards 2013.  The NSW and ACT Rotary Districts, in conjunction with a number of other organisations, are holding a significant event to identify and honour outstanding women for their service to the community.  This is not a fund raising event, however any money raised after costs, will go to the Rotary Foundation for PolioPlus.  Keep the following dates in your calendar:

  • 1st December 2012                          Send your nominations to Fern Linden
  • 8th March 2013                                  Awards Gala Dinner

This is a District 9750 initiative were all Districts in NSW are supporting; the project is chaired by Fern Linden, therefore visit the District website to access the criteria and Nomination Form.  Nominate the Inspirational Women in your area and register for the Gala Dinner to support your nomination.

As November is The Rotary Foundation Month, take the time to review the programmes and how you can support the Foundation in their programmes and financially.

ISSUE 7 - 16th October, 2012

Welcome to issue number seven of the District Newsletter for 2012-13. October, being Vocational Service month, is the ideal time to review the vocations of your club membership and use this medium as a focus for membership development.

It is hard to believe that we are just over three months into the year and when I look back to see what has been achieved; I can well understand that I have covered a lot of ground and clubs in this time.  Though the physical side of getting around the clubs is easy to cope with,  the volume of emails sometimes sees me getting behind from time to time, but the discipline of making sure at least once a week the backlog is eliminated overcomes this situation. The plethora of emails from Rotary International, Community Groups, Government Departments and Clubs was something I anticipated but not the volume. It takes a little time to prioritise and not treat everything as urgent.

In the last fortnight, besides Clubs visits and completing the round of AG Group Presidents’ meetings, an Australian Youth Exchange Conference was hosted by the three Sydney Districts and held in North Sydney. D9750 New Generations Chair PAG Paul Ward-Harvey was the convenor and Conference Chair. Well done Paul, the conference was well attended and well managed. The three Sydney District Governors attended the opening session which was officially opened by the Hon. Victor Dominello MP, Minister for Citizenship and Communities and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.

The Group Study Exchange Team Leader was selected and within a few days the four Team Members will be also selected. The Team Leader is PP Richard Booth from the Rotary Club of Wollondilly North.  We congratulate Richard and wish him every success with the exchange.

District Committees are working hard for the learning and enjoyment of Rotarians.  I urge all Rotarians to support the following events:

District Conference (26th-28th October 2012) – The conference is fast approaching; therefore go to the District website www.rotaryd9750.org.au and REGISTER NOW; it will help the conference committee plan. By the time you get this Newsletter the registration system is on the cusp of closing, so do not delay with your registration.

NSW Police Officer of the Year (2nd November 2012) – Support the event and hear about the good work of the Police across the NSW Local Area Commands.

Inspirational Women’s Dinner (8th March 2013) – This is a NSW Rotary Districts’ event and information will shortly be circulated.  The process is in two parts; the first is for Rotarians to nominate Inspirational Women to be part of the selection process and the second part is to attend the function to witness the achievements of the many well-credentialed women.  The function is being held on International Women’s Day in 2013.  Clubs need to start their planning and promotion now.  This type of function is great to recognise inspirational women in your local community and to promote Rotary diversity, public awareness and membership opportunities.

As October is Vocational Service Month, take the time to review your Vocational Service programme and plan your club activities and use this month’s theme as a support for membership development.

“Peace through Service”,

ISSUE 6 - 30th September, 2012

Welcome to issue number six of the District Newsletter for 2012-13.September, being New Generations month, saw strong emphasis on NYSF Orientation, Youth Exchange Inbound and Outbound training and calling for nominations for RYLA in reiterating Rotary’s prodigious youth programmes.

I am pleased to share with you Rotaract Australia’s brand new national newsletter RotarACTION AU which is for Rotaractors, Rotarians and the community at large.  This newsletter is about sharing and showcasing some of the wonderful achievements of Rotaract, and Rotaractors, from across Australia.  In the first edition, it stretches from a tri-district harbour cruise for Polio Plus to four Rotaractors receiving Paul Harris Fellow recognition.  By illustrating Rotaract efforts on a national scale, they hope that current Rotaractors and Rotarians alike will be impressed and enthused, motivating them to continue to excel in their communities.  Please visit their website www.rotaract.org.au/newsletter to view and sign up to receive RotarACTION AU.

September has been a busy month with 13 Official visits, 4 AG Group Presidents’ meetings and 5 District meetings.  I have now completed 31 Official visits and have witnessed the enormous breadth of the District activities; which are only limited by the lack of imagination.

District Committees are working hard for the learning and enjoyment of Rotarians.  I urge all Rotarians to support the following events:

Group Study Exchange – Team Leader and Team Member selection will be finalised in early October.  The Team member nomination close date has been extended to 8th October, so get nominations in.

Tri-District Foundation Dinner (15th October 2012) – this is an ideal event to socialise with Rotarians from the three Sydney Districts.  It is also an opportunity for President-Elects have a photo with their incoming Rotary International President, Ron Burton.

District Conference (26th-28th October 2012) – The conference is fast approaching; therefore go to the District website www.rotaryd9750.org.au and REGISTER NOW; it will help the conference committee plan.

ISSUE 5 - 20th September, 2012

Welcome to issue number five of the District Newsletter for 2012-13.

September is New Generations Month, an ideal time to review your Youth projects and plan your club participation. The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Orientation Evening was held on Monday 10th; attended by NYSF participants, parents, schools and supporters, an excellent programme for those who aspire to science vocations. Sunday 16th, I attended the information session for Youth Exchange where both inbound and outbound students were in attendance.  In District 9750 we have a great training program whereby students in both arms of the programme are fully briefed over a series of forums which includes the “Ds” – that is Dos and Don’ts.  The Youth Exchange committee do a tremendous job. Also during the last month, the Science and Engineering Challenge was held and, while not adopted by all clubs, is a worthwhile project.

It is time to start reviewing your Club commitment to other Youth programmes; RYLA which is being held in January 2013 as well as RYPEN and MUNA both scheduled for May 2013; all these programmes have a long lead time, so start your plans early. Formation plans for new Interact Clubs are well advanced and I look forward to an announcement in the near future.

It was the start of a very busy month for New Generations.

My official visit to clubs is well under way and I welcome the opportunity to learn about club activities and meet members where I can relay messages from Rotary International and myself. The friendship, idea exchange and support on these visits make the experience very enjoyable.

I have completed five of the eight AG Group Presidents’ meetings where amazing ideas and projects have been discussed. Most Groups have resolved to work together on joint projects and periodically have joint meetings thus enabling reasonable sized numbers for guest speakers where numbers would be small if held by one club. AG Group calendars are being discussed whereby clubs can list projects and support each other, rather than compete with each other by planning functions on the same date..

The Rotary Plus training is running again this year and the initial two forums have been well supported. This is a leadership and personal development seminar open to all; it can be an ideal introduction to leadership for new members and aspiring club leaders.

The District Conference is progressing well and details can be sourced on the website.  It will be a celebration of Rotary where participants will be inspired, motivated and enjoy great fellowship.  The Conference is a wonderful way to ‘fan the flame’ of Rotary passion, by hearing great speakers and learn how Rotary is making a difference.

Go to the District website www.rotaryd9750.org.au and REGISTER NOW; it will help the conference committee plan.

ISSUE 4 - 1st September, 2012

Welcome to issue number four of the District Newsletter for 2012-13.

August was Membership and Extension month;  an ideal time to review your club membership recruitment and retention programmes. The District Membership team has been busy during the month; meeting, planning and promoting membership initiatives, so keep them in mind as guest speakers. As part of my Official Visits several clubs have incorporated member inductions, and it is pleasing to see membership appears to be on the increase, given the number of new member inductions appearing in Bulletins, provided retention is maintained.

I attended the RAWCS Eastern Region meeting over the weekend of 18th and 19th August; it was a credit to RAWCS District Chair ‘Morph’ and his team for an excellent weekend. The weekend also saw two worthy recipients recognised; the first being Graham Morphett (Morph) who received the Len Avard Shield which is a recognition for long and dedicated service originally to the FAIM concept and now RAWCS.  Morph follows an elite group from D9750 – (1996) Len Avard, Riverwood, (1997) Ron Wynn, Shellharbour, (2004) Dr Ron Sommers, and (2011) Noel Causer, Corrimal. The second was PHF recognition for Associate Professor Peter Haertsch, plastic and reconstructive surgeon, for volunteer service to Interplast. Peter has performed in excess of 400 operations during his annual trips to underdeveloped nations; a truly incredible feat.

One important message communicated was RAWCS has a resources toolbox and any club wishing to initiate an international project can save a lot of time and heartache by contacting RAWCS for information and advice before ‘reinventing the wheel’.

On Sunday 26th August, I attended the Briefing session for the inbound Youth Exchange students. What a committed Youth Exchange committee D9750 has; it was an excellent training day for the students. The program covers the “dos” and “don’t” and how to get the greatest benefit from their Australian experience. The enthusiasm and body language in the room showed that the inbound students are focussed and here for the right reason.

Today I attended the WorldSkills Australia National Competition at the Showground in Homebush where 500 top trainees in over 50 categories, battle it out over three days in the skilled sector’s version of the Olympics. The public get to see elite apprentices aged 23 and under in action. The exhibition at Homebush cannot be described, one has to be there to see the skill and dedication and smell the smells to understand such a competition. Winners from this competition will become a Skilleroo and go on to battle it out on the world stage next year at the International competition in Leipzig Germany. The benefit of Rotary being involved with WorldSkills is that these young participants will become future leaders in trade based small businesses.

Please remember the important dates coming up in September – Group Study Exchange Team Leader and Team applications and Graffiti Removal Day.

September is New Generations Month, take the time to review your Youth projects and plan your club participation.

A special part of a DG year is Official Visits and they continue to be an inspiration as we hear about many initiatives being promoted in clubs.

“Peace through Service”.

ISSUE 3 - 13th August, 2012

Welcome to issue number three of the District Newsletter for 2012-13.

August is Membership and Extension month; this is an ideal time to review your club membership recruitment program along with retention initiatives.  District Chair Ken Patteson gave a stirring address at the Combined Presidents’ meeting last Friday night which covered many initiatives and highlighting his “3R” approach.

Much has happened in the first six weeks of the new Rotary year, both at District and club level and I look forward to continuing my Club visits where both Christine and I have received support for our messages and appreciate the reception given to both of us.  The Rotary organisation is a great vehicle for developing friendships when we all work for the common goal of building a better world by promoting RI President Sakuji Tanaka’s theme of ‘Peace through Service’.

Our first Combined Presidents’ meeting has been held and I must compliment AG Sue Hayward on her excellent job as MC on the evening.  A lot of information was given in both a formal and passionate way, as well as allowing time for networking.  Notepads were getting a good workout when quality addresses by District Secretary Cheryl on District matters, IPDG Phil on the NSW Government initiated Graffiti Removal Day on 23rd September and the future of D9675 by DGE Garry and DGN Barry were delivered.  These addresses were followed by PDG Glenn on upcoming Rotary Foundation matters and then a passionate Vocational Service address was presented by effervescent PP Dot which covered many initiatives but specifically covered our District MOU with WorldSkills and the upcoming national competition where Rotarians are asked to participate as volunteers.  , PP Graham then spoke on training programs and the Rotary Speaker Panel.  Whilst there was plenty of enthusiasm and goodwill in the room, unfortunately the poor weather and the fire around Waterfall prevent some Presidents from attending.

I strongly recommend that clubs that missed the Combined Presidents’ meeting through the inclement weather catch up on important Rotary information by utilising the Rotary Speakers’ Panel.

The first AG Group Presidents’ Meeting was held on 2nd August, where Presidents from Group D meet with me to discuss and share initiatives and projects.  The positive outcome of these meetings is that they are interactive where participation is enthusiastic, open and displays a keenness to co-operate and work together to grow Rotary in their local community.

August sees the RAWCS Eastern Region meeting being held in Wollongong and hosted by the Rotary Club of Fairy Meadow.  The date is the weekend of 18th and 19th August where all Rotarians are welcome to learn more about RAWCS projects.

The New Generations, Youth Exchange program is going well and, on the 26th August, the Inbound YEP Student Briefing will be held at Stanwell Tops.

Rotarians should have fun while making a difference and enjoy the year while following Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka by promoting “Peace through Service”.

ISSUE 2 - 1st August, 2012

Welcome to issue number two of the District Newsletter.

I have settled into the role of District Governor and look forward to meeting all Rotarians as I make my Official Visits in the coming months. During late June and early July, Christine and I attended 20 Changeovers and it was great to see the enthusiasm and camaraderie when celebrating the achievements of the last year and the excitement for the plans for the year ahead. Rotary offers an amazing range of life changing programs which are evident in the innovation and forward planning of clubs. One highlight was the Rotaract Changeover, where we saw Jake Weragoda hand the baton to new Rotaract District Representative Melissa Newman. Rotaract is a growing part within our District and I urge all clubs to partner with a Rotaract Club, when possible, to experience the advantages of both groups designing projects and working side by side.

I have started the round of Official Visits and appreciate the warmth and hospitality of the clubs during these visits, and the courtesy and enthusiasm shown to Christine as she presents her DG Partner’s project and outlines the reasons and statistics that underpin her decision.

The first of four Combined Presidents’ Meetings (dates in the District Directory) will be held at The Sutherland United Services Club on Friday 10th August 2012. District Secretary Cheryl has sent an invitation to Presidents; therefore confirm your attendance as soon as possible. If for any reason a President cannot attend, it is incumbent upon that President to send a representative and confirm accordingly. These meetings are designed to disseminate information and clubs not in attendance will miss vital information.

As well, AG Group Presidents’ Meetings are being organised by your Assistant Governors (dates in the District Directory); these meetings provided an opportunity to discuss matters of common interest with other Presidents in your area as well as the District Governor team.

Over the weekend of 21st and 22nd July a number of us attended the Rotary Success Conference in Canberra. Once again, this Australian Conference was well attended and had a great array speakers and networking opportunities. Over the weekend Rotary International President Elect Ron Burton, Zone Director John Boag, Past Zone Director Stuart Heal and a number of Zone Coordinators addressed us on many aspects of Rotary. The closing address was by the former first lady of Timor Leste, Kirsty Sword Gusmao who spoke about the successes that Rotary has had in Timor Leste.

We all left Canberra, more informed by the experience.

August is Membership and Extension month; this is an ideal time to review your club membership recruitment program along with retention initiatives.

I constantly remind Rotarians - enjoy the year and make a difference by following Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka by promoting “Peace through Service”.

ISSUE 1 - 15th July, 2012

Welcome everyone to the new Rotary year and my first mid-month District Newsletter.  I am looking forward to a memorable year and hope as a District we can maintain the high standard of the past, enjoying the fellowship while making a difference.  This year there will two newsletters per month; at mid-month and month-end.  It is intended that each circulation will have relevant information covering past and future District events.   I, therefore, encourage all Rotarians to submit articles on projects, functions, local news stories and media successes which will be of interest to the broader District.

My sincere congratulations to all incoming Presidents and Club leaders; it is anticipated you will experience a rewarding and fulfilling year.  This year your District Leadership team is trained and ready to assist, therefore, consult your District Directory for details regarding the Avenues of Service Chairs and Rotary Speakers Panel.  The Governor team including DGE Garry Browne and DGN Barry Antees are also ready to assist.  All District Rotarians are an excellent source for guest speaker spots.  In addition, each club is ably assisted by an Assistant Governor who should be your first point of contact, if administration support is required.

Over the last weeks Christine and I have attended as many changeovers as we could and are excited by the astounding range of projects, the innovation and forward planning each club has undertaken or proposed.  To experience the camaraderie at these functions augurs well for the coming year.

On Monday 16th July I embark on my round of Official visits which will give all clubs an opportunity to hear ‘first hand’ what is planned or, as the year progresses, what has happened.  Each Rotarian should now have received their District Directory and I refer you to it for the Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka’s message, Governor’s message and District goals.

Within this circulation and future issues there will be critical dates, therefore, please note and diarise them as they will be strictly adhered to.

It is my ambition to re-kindle the Rotary passion in all Rotarians and, with the support of the Leadership team; we have planned a memorable year.  It is the obligation of each Rotarian to ignite their own passion, hence my motto “IF IT IS TO BE – IT IS UP TO ME”.  Enjoy the year and make a difference by following Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka by promoting “Peace through Service”.
