PROBUS

Probus originated in the UK in 1965. The first Probus Clubs were formed in New Zealand in 1974 and in Australia in 1976. Probus has filled a need for today's active retirees, so much so that the growth has been phenomenal. It is now a world-wide movement.
Probus is an association of retired and semi-retired people who join together in clubs, the basic purpose of which is to provide regular opportunities for them to keep their minds active, expand their interests and to enjoy the fellowship of new friends.
The name Probus is an abbreviation of PRO-fessional and BUS-iness indicating the membership base initially targeted.  However, today membership is encouraged form anyone who has had some measure of responsibility or achievement in any field of worthy endeavor.  Having assessed the need for such an orgainsation in the community and found it to be viable, Rotary’s role is one of founding a club and bringing it to its chartering.

Probus is self governing once formed, interaction between the two identities could be advantageous to all.

Probus clubs have no service component! A District 9750 initiative is to strongly encourage liaison between Rotary and Probus by promoting social activities and interaction. We are very committed to ensure the health of our existing clubs but also to meet the needs of active retirees.
Probus activities fall into three areas: A monthly meeting during daytime for approximately two hours during which time business is conducted and a guest speaker presented; visits to venues of particular interest between meetings; extended tours as determined by the membership. There is a minimal annual membership fee and morning tea charges with other costs such an interest trips and tours being at each members’ discretion.

Membership and participation provide self-generating goodwill, sense of belonging, a diverse background of ideas, continuing self-esteem and a cordial environment to share.
Probus is a Community Service project of Rotary and is a valuable community institution successful in its achievements and serving a worthy role in its endeavors.

PROBUS clubs are local to towns and districts and often can be located in town information websites.
