It is thrilling to report the latest position with regard to Polio.
The figures being received continue to look good although vigilance is the key. From a global point of view, the data provided at June 15th indicated that there have been 349 cases reported year to date against a figure of 552 for the same period last year. We are having great success in the four endemic countries (58 versus 405 last year) while the cases in non-endemic countries have grown (291 versus 147 last year).
A few observations by country:
-
Afghanistan – there were no new cases reported in the second week of June and only 10 cases YTD 15 June
-
India – there were no new cases reported in the second week of June and only 21 cases YTD 15 June. The last reported case was 29 April.
-
Nigeria - there were no new cases reported in the second week of June and only three cases YTD 15 June
-
Pakistan - there were two new cases reported in the second week of June and only 24 cases YTD 15 June. This is however an increase over the same period last year and consideration is being given to bringing NIDs forward
It is time to get excited! It is not however time to be complacent and we still need your contributions to PolioPlus. Last year contributions in our District were $112,363 which is above the target of $2000 per club per year but does include a generous one off donation of $15,000 from the RC of Sydney.
