Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid - MHFA

The Rotary Clubs of Maroubra and Randwick have joined to offer subsidised Mental Health First Aid courses to improve understanding of mental health in our community.  The MHFA 2-day course teaches mental health first aid strategies to members of the public and is conducted by a fully trained instructor. MHFA courses are open to all members of the community. Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves. MHFA courses can provide members of the community with:

  • Skills in how to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems.
  • Knowledge of the possible causes or risk factors for these mental health problems
  • Awareness of the evidenced based medical, psychological and alternative treatments available.
  • Skills in how to give appropriate initial help and support someone experiencing a mental health problem.
  • Skills in how to take appropriate action if a crisis situation arises involving suicidal behaviour, panic attack, stress reaction to trauma, overdose or threatening psychotic behaviour.

Skills in how to take appropriate action if a crisis situation arises Participant Testimonial (Name Supplied) Within 24 hours of completing this course I encountered a potential suicide event in my own home with a dinner guest who was not well known to me. I was blown away by the immediate recall I had from the course where it felt like I moved over and our course facilitator moved into my body and all the course guidance came pouring out. Absolutely amazing and I felt so confident with all I did and said. The outcome is outstanding with the person I helped never having looked back. The best 2 days I have ever invested in community service- a life saver!"
