Dick was born in Naracoorte, raised in Renmark, educated in Adelaide and graduated in medicine in 1966. He married Liz in 1968 and they lived overseas until 1972 working and travelling in the UK, Canada and Europe. In 1973 Dick started his lifelong career in rural general practice in Strathalbyn.
He joined Strathalbyn Rotary Club in 1974 and led a GSE Team to Pennsylvania in the US Bicentennial Year, 1976. He has been President of both RC of Strathalbyn and RC of Stirling. He has worked on a number of District Committees: GSE, TRF, Polio Plus, Medic Alert and Australian Rotary Health. He is currently on the national Board of Australian Rotary Health.
In the mid 80’s Dick and Liz moved to the Adelaide Hills where he continues to practise as a GP in Stirling with a special interest in minor surgery, mental health and aviation and underwater medicine. He is a senior medical advisor to a major medical indemnity insurer, Avant. He has provided medical support to seven outback cattle drives and worked with the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Dick was Chair of the Adelaide Hills Division of General Practice for six years, was on the Southern Adelaide Health Service Board, was Chair of the Drug and Alcohol Services SA for nine years and is currently on the SA Board of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
In 1984 Dick and Liz established a 17 acre chardonnay and pinot noir vineyard in the Piccadilly Valley and live on the property.
Liz has qualifications in social work and social administration. She retired in 2010 from senior executive roles in the SA Public Service. She is now Chair of the Wyatt Trust, a major benevolent organisation in South Australia.
They have two sons: James who lives in Sydney and Tom who lives in Tokyo. They have three grandsons Archie, Monty and Haruta.
Dick maintains an active interest in cycling, scuba diving, sailing and snow skiing. Liz does water colour painting and together they enjoy travel, opera and live theatre.
