There will be no meeting on 19 March as we are attending our Rotary District's Conference at Port Macquarie.

Our meeting on 26 March will be a Club Forum.

There will be no meeting on 2 April being Good Friday.

Our following meeting will be 9 April:

Priyanka Karunanithi - Solar Power in Nepal

In early 2009, James Centenera, a UNSW engineering graduate, visited a remote underprivileged village in Nepal known as Nirmal Pokhari.  For a few months James lived with the villagers of this community and personally experienced their daily struggles.  In mid 2009, James formed a team of students and young adult volunteers who are passionate about addressing poverty in Nepal.

The group is ‘Light the Way’ and they plan to build a solar powered community centre and implement an adult education program in Nirmal Pokhari.  ‘Light the Way’ believes implementing these projects are the optimal way out of the poverty cycle for the village.  ‘Light the Way’ also hopes to eventually implement this kind of project in neighbouring communities.

Light the Way

Priyanka Karunanithi is in her third year of university and is currently studying Commerce at the University of New South Wales. She is part of a scholarship program which offers 18 months industry experience as part of her degree.  For her first work placement, she worked at in the accounting division at Coca-Cola Amatil.  Priyanka is also actively involved in university societies such as the Co-op Scholars Charitable Society which organises similar activities to Rotaract.  She is really passionate about effecting change in the lives of those less fortunate and so was more than excited at the opportunity that Light the Way offered.  She travelled to Nepal along with six other team members to begin implementing the program in January this year.

Ken Tabuki
is in his fifth year of university, also studying commerce at the University of New South Wales. Ken is also part of the same scholarship program and has gained valuable industry experience in a number of firms.
Outside of his university commitments Ken is involved with aid projects in developing countries.  Ken has previously volunteered with the Habitat for Humanity Global Village Project which has led to him to complete a development project in Mongolia.  Ken also travelled to Nepal in January for Light the Way.

Priyanka Karunanithi and Ken Tabuki will be speaking at the Rotary Club of Chatswood Sunrise on 9 April at 7am.  Come along and learn about the passion he and his fellow engineering students have for this project.
