Vale Tom Galletta
As most members would be aware, Tom passed away on Sunday 28 September and was farewelled by a very large assembly of family, friends, colleagues and Rotarians at St Mary’s Cathedral on Friday 3 October.
While we all knew Tom as a successful businessman, loving family man, respected citizen and committed Rotarian, we learnt even more from the eulogy delivered by his daughter Elizabeth. In addition, she described a self-made man of many talents, who overcame difficulties by always focussing on the positives, even as he faced the inevitable consequences of his illness.

The Rotary Club of Kings Cross donated 5 Shelterboxes for use in the Phillipines.
This is an update from Shelterbox people on the ground.
The most vulnerable families on the Bantayan Islands
have now moved into ShelterBox tents. The first batch of tents cleared
from Cebu City airport arrived yesterday and were distributed
immediately upon arrival. More tents are due to arrive today and
tomorrow as aid is transported away from the airport. The ShelterBox
Response Team working to assist families on Bantayan have had to
overcome a shortage of vehicles on the island. As a result the team have
managed to arrange for small vans to be ferried across from Cebu Island
for use in the ongoing distribution of aid.Three additional ShelterBox
Response Team members are traveling out to the Philippines. Alice
Jefferson (UK), James Edgerley (UK) and Jim Miller (US) are all due to
arrive on Tuesday night (local time).
The next replacement ShelterBox Response Team is preparing to travel.

Rotarians and stallholders join Bill Gates in world's biggest commercial at the Kings Cross Sunday Markets in Sydney
Sunday markets at the El Alamein Fountain are generally a fun place to be. Even more so this week, when Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Kings Cross, stallholders and visitors joined Bill Gates in the world's biggest commercial to end polio.
In 1985 Rotary launched PolioPlus, a programme to help deleiver the polio vaccine world wide in order to eradicate the terrible desease. From more than 125 countries being polio-endemic it is now down to only three, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. Hence, the current campaign is named "we are this close" to completion.
Join the cause! Go to www.thisclose.endpolio.org, upload your photo and become part of in the worl's biggest commercial.

What is Rotary?
Rotary is an international organisation of service clubs, known as Rotary Clubs. It is a secular organisation open to all persons regardless of race, sex, color, creed or political preference.
Paul Harris the founder of Rotary said: “Man has affinity for his fellow man, regardless of race, creed, or politics, and the greater the variety, the more the zest. All friendliness needs is a sporting chance; it will take care of itself in any company.”
— A Road I Have Travelled, THE ROTARIAN, February 1934
