History

Rotary was founded by Paul Harris, a lawyer, and three business associates in Chicago on 23 February 1905. He recognized the potential of an association of like-minded professional and business people who could meet and share common interests on a regular basis.

In his honour since 1957, Paul Harris Fellows have been recognised to express appreciation for contributions to the humanitarian and educational programs of the Rotary Foundation. Those programs include an array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world and enhance international friendship and understanding. These projects are funded, implemented, and managed by Rotarians and Rotary clubs around the world.

The three elements of a Paul Harris Fellow that are presented are a certificate, a lapel pin and a medallion. The certificate states the person has been named a Paul Harris Fellow in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations between peoples of the world.

Recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow remains a respected and prestigious honour.

The Club has recognised members and non-rotarians because it believes that their life exemplifies the humanitarian and educational objectives of The Rotary Foundation.

A comment by Calum Thomson*

There are now close to 1.1 million Paul Harris Fellows in the world today. These men and women have indeed devoted themselves to the attention of the world’s needs by raising over one billion dollars for The Rotary Foundation since 1957. Is it not right that we have used the Founder of Rotary’s name to recognize these worthy men and women because our Paul Harris Fellows reflect the thoughts and hopes of Paul Harris himself?

It is a truly wonderful honor to be named as a Paul Harris Fellow; to accept that pin and medallion which contains the image of Paul Harris. Yet for all of us, and I mean ALL of us, it is only the beginning of a journey – a journey to even greater commitment to donating our excess dollars to helping others...

Rotarians are indeed men and women of character who devote themselves to giving service and their excess dollars to helping our fellow human beings. Paul Harris would be so proud of the Paul Harris Fellowship ....
